Endogenous FGF21 expression and interaction in metabolic organs. The liver, white and brown adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, the pancreas, and the heart are among the metabolic organs that express and secrete FGF21 in response to diverse stimuli [13, 15, 18, 20]. The FGFR1/KLB complex in the brain and white adipose tissue can be targeted by systemic FGF21, which is mostly produced by the liver.
