The liver, white and brown adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, the pancreas, and the heart are among the metabolic organs that express and secrete FGF21 in response to diverse stimuli [13, 15, 18, 20]. The FGFR1/KLB complex in the brain and white adipose tissue can be targeted by systemic FGF21, which is mostly produced by the liver.
